Man Arrested In Hit-And-Run Mishap

Avondale police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a hit-and-run accident on Thursday that seriously injured a high school student who was on her way to school.

Jose Angel Montes Chavez, 52, of Phoenix, was questioned Friday morning and arrested on a charge of felony hit-and-run and leaving the scene of an accident.

The victim was 16-year-old Audrey Marquez, who was crossing the street in a crosswalk at Avondale Boulevard and Whyman Street. A Ford Taurus struck her and left the scene without stopping.

The incident happened before 7 a.m.

Marquez was seriously injured and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. She is currently in stable condition.

The vehicle was discovered later Thursday near Durango Street and El Mirage Road. The car had significant front end damage.

Police followed up on leads which led them to Chavez.

Chavez will be booked into the Maricopa County Jail later Friday.
