Arpaio To Fight Court Ruling On Jail Abortion Policy
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has another fight on his hands Tuesday concerning his jail abortion policy. The legal fight is over an unwritten Maricopa County Jail policy denying female prisoners access to abortion care. When it comes to his jail policy, it's personal. "My mother died having me when she should have had an abortion. She refused," Arpaio said.He plans to appeal a lower court's ruling which allows women in prison to obtain timely, safe and legal abortions. The American Civil Liberties Union plans to ask the Court of Appeals to uphold the ruling."It's just my opinion that we should not use taxpayers' money to transport women who voluntarily want a abortion," said the sheriff."So that means I would have to tie up my people, take them from the jail to an abortion clinic, wait for the operation and bring them back to jail. That is not right. I don't agree with that," Arpaio said.
