GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Struggling homeowners from across the Valley made their way to Glendale on Thursday to try and save their homes. They attended a workshop designed to help homeowners on the verge of foreclosure. The two-day workshop is part of President Barack Obama's "Making Homes Affordable Program."Homeowners who have fallen behind on their monthly mortgage payment can sit down face-to-face with their lenders to try and work out a loan modification and lower their payments."We're about six months behind on our mortgage," said homeowner Reggie Patterson. "We are about 12 days away from foreclosure.""If we could just lower the payment a few hundred dollars a month it would make a huge difference in our lives," said homeowner Melissa Perez of Phoenix.Homeowners started lining up in front of the Glendale Civic Center around 6:30 a.m. Once inside, they met with financial representavies to determine whether they qualify for a loan modification.Julia Hollie had the interest rate on her mortgage lowered from 7 percent to 2 percent."I will save roughly $700 a month," Hollie said. When you're income goes down, everything else goes down with it. This is going to help me bring myself back up."Event organizers estimate about 30 percent of the homeowners who pass through the workshop will get an answer on-site about their loan modification request.Rachel Austin of Phoenix was told there was nothing they could do to help."We were too upside-down on our loan and our income wasn't sufficient," said Austin. "They told us to lower our expenses and get more income and wait for the letter when the foreclosure happens."Housing counselors and lenders will be available Friday at the Glendale Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
