Possible Grocery Strike Concerns Shoppers

Customers Worry About Impact If Employees Walk Out

A possible strike has thousands of Fry's and Safeway workers on the verge of walking off the job Friday.

As a result, customers across the Valley wonder what they should expect when they go shopping this weekend.

"The part that concerns me is getting a whole bunch of new people in and getting them up to speed," said shopper John Campbell. "It will definitely impact the quality of service."

"It's going to have an impact," said shopper Louis Cox. "When you get a bunch of new workers that are not familiar with the system or the store, you'll see it."

JoEllen Lynn, the public affairs director for Fry's, said if there's a strike, there would not be that big of an impact, and the company is doing everything possible to prevent a walk-out.

Fry's is also pushing forward with a back up plan just in case.

"Of course we are hoping that we don't have a strike," said Lynn. "However, we are moving forward and hiring replacement workers."

So far, Fry's has hired 2,500 temporary workers and expect to hire thousands more by the end of the week. Customers hope they are not needed.

"I think there is a way to work it out, I really do," said Campbell.
