Homeowner Finally Gets Loan Modified

Tina Ashburn Thanks CBS 5 News For Saving Her Money

POSTED: 3:33 pm MST September 7, 2009

A Valley homeowner will save about $250 a month on her mortgage payment.

The savings comes after Tina Ashburn spent months trying to modify her home loan with Wells Fargo.

"As the economy changed and bills became more difficult to pay, I thought it was imperative to see if I could lower my interest rate," said Ashburn.

The Phoenix flower shop designer contacted her lender, Wells Fargo, several times this year to see if she could modify her loan and get a lower, more manageable interest rate, but she had no success.

"They asked me to send them a million pieces of paperwork -- income taxes, bank statements, everything," said Ashburn, "and they turned me down twice."

Ashburn then saw a CBS 5 newscast last week that included a statement from a Wells Fargo executive promising to help homeowners who have hit a roadblock with their loan modifications.

Minutes later, she picked up the phone and called Wells Fargo to try again.

"I read to him words directly from the CBS 5 website and he said, you're right, we're going to help you. What can I do for you?" said Ashburn. "He then pushed a button and lowered the interest rate. It was like magic. It would never have happened had it not been for Channel 5."

Ashburn was told her interest rate would be reduced from 9.75 to 5 percent -- exactly the kind of loan modification she needed.

"I'm hoping it will be about $250 in savings a month, which is a lot of grocery money or an APS bill," said Ashburn. "That's a significant amount of money for me."

Ashburn is now hoping other homeowners will get the same kind of assistance.

"I'm hoping Wells Fargo will come forward and do what they said they're going to do, help homeowners," Asburn said.

As a result of the CBS 5 News reports exposing the growing number of frustrated homeowners who can't get a loan modification, Wells Fargo will hold a three day Home Preservation Workshop beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The event will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center, but is only open to homeowners who have been working on a loan modification or have suffered a financial hardship and can no longer make any more mortgage payments.

It is by appointment only.

For more information call Wells Fargo at 1-800-678-7986.
