PHOENIX -- Record metal prices have spurred a recycling revolution and people in the Valley are capitalizing on it.The price of metal today means homeowners may not realize how much money they have lying around the house.Everything -- from caps from fluorescent lights, worn-out computer parts, and copper plumbing to the stainless steel kitchen sink -- is worth something.Jay Robie, of the CMS/Morrell scrap yard in Phoenix, said he pays big money for junk car parts.
Robie said he'll pay $90 for a broken catalytic converter, which uses rodium to clean the car's exhaust. Rodium is five times more expensive than platinum.CMS/Morrell deals with $2.5 million worth of recycled metal every month, all from right here in the Valley.Local businesses are getting in on the action, too.Robie said the businesses, which have always treated their scrap metal as a nuisance, are now figuring it into their companies' profitability. The metal mania has a drawback, though: thieves are also attracted to the precious parts.Copper thefts have become such a common occurrence in the Valley that Robie has to screen for criminals at his scrap yard. But, he says, anyone just trying to turn their trash into cash is welcome.Steel is worth about a nickel per pound, so it takes a large amount to make it worthwhile.Stainless steel, brass and aluminum are worth quite a bit more.A stainless steel kitchen sink is worth $8 to $10. Aluminum wheels will net between $10 and $12. Computer monitors and old PCs are worth a couple dollars each. For a list of places in the Valley that will turn trash into cash, click here.
