The Food and Drug Administration Tuesday warned against using certain Zicam nasal products, saying they can lead to loss of smell permanently.

Scottsdale based Matrixx Initiatives stands behind its Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel spray and swabs.

The homeopathic remedies are sold without prescription and are readily available.

Matrixx said there is no causal link between its products and nasal damage and felt the FDA warning was unwarranted.

The FDA said it has received 130 reports of loss of smell related to Zicam products in the last decade.

One man who was part of a $12.7 million settlement with the company in 2004 said he still can't smell or taste and that hurt his ability to find a job.
