Luxury Cars Come With Huge Price Tags

Should You Buy That Ferrari Enzo Or Personal Submarine?

They aren't called luxury cars for nothing. But then again, some luxury cars are more luxurious than others.

We're not talking something the likes of the $35,300 BMW 3 Series Coupe, the $50,000 Porsche Cayman or even the $86,700 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Nice cars all, but not quite luxurious enough.

No, we're thinking something along the lines of the Bugatti Veyron, which costs around $1.7 million, or slightly more than Tiger Woods reportedly paid for his wedding to former model Elin Nordegrn. Seriously.

I know what you're thinking: With $1.7 million you could buy your own private jet or perhaps your own personal island. Unfortunately, money doesn't stretch that far any more.

You might be able to swing a Cessna Citation 11, the entry level for a jet, for around what a Bugatti Veyron costs, but it would have to be a used model. New ones will run you around $2.6 million.

And a personal island? Johnny Depp reportedly paid $3.5 million for a private island in the Bahamas in 2004. Even in this market, that island's value has to have gone up since then.

If you're looking for a place to lay your head for $1.7 million, don't expect a mansion. But that amount will buy a nice piece of property in Chappaqua, N.Y. The five-bedroom, 5,200 square-foot house sits on 1.1 acres 35 miles north of Manhattan and could be going on the market before too long. Its current residents? Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Ferrari Enzo

But if you can't afford a new Veyron, there are plenty of cheaper options.

Newell Coach P2000i

Take the Ferrari Enzo for instance. This fine piece of machinery will run you about $1 million, depending on the options of course.

You could shell out that kind of money, or you could invest it in an RV.

But what kind of RV does $1 million buy? Look no further than P2000i built by Newell Coach. Basically a mansion on wheels, this RV features an LCD or plasma TV in every compartment of the 45-foot-long vehicle, including the dashboard.

Once parked, four sections expand outward from the vehicle to provide luxurious space so that you can party like a rock star. Newell builds about 40 of these beauties each year (each one takes 10 months) with the help of Porsche engineering and using a C15 Caterpillar engine.

Lamborghini Reventon

Lamborghini Reventon

Coming in at a cool $1.4 million, Lamborghini's new ultra-elite supercar Reventon has already sold out. About 20 of the vehicles, which are inspired by the F22 Raptor fighter jet, have been sold since it debuted last year.

Named appropriately enough after a bull that killed legendary matador Felix Guzman in 1943 in Mexico, this car will gore your pocketbook. For that kind of money, you would think you could buy your own private submarine ...and, in fact, you can.

Neiman Marcus-Edition Gem Triton 1000
U.S. Submarines
Gem Triton 1000 Sub

Your very-own air-conditioned submarine will run you $1.44 million if you are looking at the Neiman Marcus-Edition Gem Triton 1000 produced by U.S. Submarines. The sub has leather seating and a 360-degree view.

The sub also comes with a two-day training program and a bejeweled key chain. No word if you can get the same deal from Lamborghini.

Maybach 62S

But maybe you're looking for something simpler. Something along the lines of the Maybach 62S, which will run you only $428,750. For that money, you could either buy this Mercedes-Benz produced V12 with leather upholstery and more, or you could take a cruise.

Maybach 62S

The world's most expensive cruise is the 121 night around the world cruse in a grand suite on the Queen Elizabeth 2. That will only set you back roughly $481,191. So make your choice: a car or a cruise around the world.

Rolls-Royce Phantom

For true class, nothing beats a Rolls-Royce Phantom, if you're lucky enough to get one, considering the waiting list. For about $320,000 you can get a nice model with suicide-style rear doors and an interior that would have a sheik feeling at home.

Then again, for the cost of one Phantom, you could buy the entire 2008 Saturn vehicle lineup nearly three times over, nicely-equipped as they say in the car ads.

Aston Martin DB9 Volante/Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet/ Maserati Quattroporte

Aston Martin DB9

Let's say you're on a budget when it comes to buying your luxury car. After all, with the down economy, all you can shell out is between $125,000 and $175,000, give or take tax, title and license. Well, then, you have your choice of the likes of the Aston Martin DB9 Volante convertible at $175,550, the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet at $136,500 or the Maserati Quattroporte Automatic Executive GT at $126,500.

Necker Island
Necker Island, British Virgin Islands

Instead of taking a spin in one of those rides, you could instead spend about three or four relaxing, all-inclusive days on 74 private acres of tropical paradise in the British Virgin Islands owned by Virgin-founder Sir Richard Branson.

Necker Island is available for you and 27 of your closest friends at a cost of $47,000 per night. Of course, there is a five-night minimum if you are renting the whole island, so you might have to stretch your budget just a bit more.

That's a real bargain, too. That kind of money won't even buy you a seat for the three-hour, $200,000 trips into space Branson plans to begin in late 2009 or early 2010.

1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa

1962 Ferrari 330

But this is all child's play. For a real luxurious treat that only a prince, or Bill Gates, could afford, try out the 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa that sold for $9.3 million in May 2007, making it the most expensive Ferrari ever sold.

Wonder what $9.3 million could buy you? How about 3,720 of the new Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car, which is produced in India and retails for about 100,000 rupees, or $2,500.

Not exactly, luxurious, but hey, it gets the job done.
