GILBERT, Ariz. -- Three months ago Saturday, a 19-year-old Valley woman went on her very first date and never came home. The father of Jackie Hartman, the Gilbert teen who went missing Jan. 28, suddenly found himself pushed into new roles -- an amateur detective, a coordinator of volunteers, and most importantly, a grief-filled father.Jackie went to drive home a friend who’d had too much to drink. She never returned.Three weeks later, ATV riders came across her body in the desert.David Hartman said his diligence in uncovering what happened to his daughter that late-February morning kept him busy and prevented him from being overwhelmed by the tragedy.“She was raped, murdered, thrown in the desert," Hartman told CBS 5 News Anchor Kent Dana in a One-On-One report. "You would think I’d be more mad. But maybe it’s because we had so much support.”Jonathan Burns, 25, was indicted Feb. 9 on charges of first-degree murder, sexual assault, kidnapping and misconduct involving weapons.Hartman said he'd like to ask Burns several questions. "I'd like answers," Hartman said. "Why did you take such a beautiful, innocent person, abuse her the way you did, and then do what you did? Throw her away like trash."Hartman said his daughter was quiet and kind. She liked scrap booking and was very organized. He regrets that there are some things she’ll never know.“It’s tough now," Hartman said. "She’ll never live out her dreams. She’ll never have a chance to fall in love. She never even got to kiss a boy.”Hartman wants his daughter to live on for others as well. He’s starting a foundation in her name to help when adults are missing.Unlike the many organizations for missing children, once someone is considered an adult, there are few places to turn.If you’d like more information on the foundation, you can call 602-745-2700.
