Discover Diet Dangers In Your Home

Everyone knows that chocolate cake and fettucini alfredo can make you fat, but what you may not know is that your house can do just as much damage to your waistline.

CBS 5's Jason Barry uncovered the diet dangers lurking in almost every home.

The first is large plates. Statistics show people wind up eating 30 percent more during a meal if they eat off a larger plate.

The second diet danger is dim lighting. Experts say when the lights are down, people stay at the table longer and eat more.

Television is also a concern. It's an open invitation for kids to plop down with an unhealthy snack.

Heather Wolcott is a Valley nutritionist who is convinced that the things in a person's home make a difference in his or her health and eating habits.

She insists that the best way to fight back against the TV and big plates is to leave those unhealthy foods at the grocery store.

"I think the bottom line is: if you didn't buy it, you can't eat it. So if it's not in your house, obviously, you can't pick on it or snack on it or go back for seconds or thirds on it," Wolcott said.
