Professor Wrestling: The 'Royal Rumble' Recap
Winning For Eddie
POSTED: 9:39 pm MST January 26,
2006
Listen up!Class is in session. This Sunday night, Vince McMahon and his WWE superstars invade Miami for the "Royal Rumble," one of the biggest pay-per-views of the year. The winner of the 30-man battle royal gets a shot at either the "Raw" or "Smackdown!" heavyweight title belt at "WrestleMania 22." There's also two title matches on the card. Let's get to it!Challenge Match: The Boogeyman vs. John Bradshaw Layfield
What Should Happen: If I were writing this, it wouldn't matter who won. Let's face it, JBL (who is a great heel) is out of the title mix, so his win/loss record isn't that big of a deal right now. But in this match, you have to have the B-man do something really over-the-top creepy to set up a "WrestleMania" rematch. A few weeks ago, he ate a bun-sized mole (a fake mole, to those of you scoring at home) off of the face of JBL's manager. Yuk! I have no idea how he's going to top that, which for me was the absolute goofiest thing I've seen on a wrestling show in a long, long time.
What Will Happen: JBL wins, but the Boogster forces a few worms down his throat in the end.
What Did Happen: Boogey won with a clean pin in short order (under two minutes!), which I wasn't expecting. JBL's star is falling fast.Challenge Match: Mickie James vs. Ashley
What Should Happen: Mickie is playing the role of a jealous nut, vying for the attention her idol, WWE women's champ Trish Stratus -- who serves as a special ref in this match. James should win this, setting up another Stratus clash at "WrestleMania." Don't be surprised if it's a triple-threat match involving Ashley.
What Will Happen: M.J. gets the clean pin.
What Did Happen: Mickie won it.
WWE Championship Match: Edge (c) vs. John Cena
What Should Happen: Edge is doing a fine job as the smarmy heel champion. And now that he's not the champ, I actually like Cena in the role as the babyface chasing the weasel. I'd keep the belt on Edge for a bit to see how he holds up.
What Will Happen: I like Edge in this one. Cena will get another rematch, probably sooner than we think.
What Did Happen: Edge tapped out to Cena's new submission hold, and lost the title. That was quick reign. Cena is the new WWE Champ.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Kurt Angle (c) vs. Mark Henry
What Should Happen: I'm not sure how Angle is going to carry Henry through an entertaining match, but that'll be his job. There's no way I'd book Angle to lose. For my money, this should have been Angle vs. Rey Mysterio, but McMahon feels audiences always want to see the big, lumbering strongman as opposed to the smaller, athletic superstar. Who knows, maybe he's saving Angle-Mysterio for "WrestleMania."
What Will Happen: If you have money set aside for your mortgage, and someone who takes bets on scripted wrestling events -- bet the dough on Kurt Angle to win.
What Did Happen: Angle won with a clean pin, retaining his belt.
Royal Rumble Match: 30-Man Field Featuring 15 "Raw" Superstars and 15 "Smackdown!" Superstars
What Should Happen: If it were up to me, Rey Mysterio would win. He and Kurt Angle could put on a fantastic match at "WrestleMania," in which I'd have Mysterio win. WWE has given the title to Mick Foley for a short time, so why not Rey? He deserves it, and it would be a nice tribute to Mysterio's close friend, the late Eddie Guerrero. For God's sake, it's only wrestling -- do something nice for once, Vince.
What Will Happen: Vince's son-in-law, Triple H, will win. That'll set up a triple-threat match at "WrestleMania" between Hunter, Edge and Cena for the WWE Championship. It's not what I want, but that's how I see it playing out.
What Did Happen: In the end, Rey Mysterio -- who dedicated his match to the late, great Eddie Guerrero -- eliminated Triple H, then eliminated Randy Orton for the victory. I'm shocked!! Vince did something nice for a change! Thanks for reading my column, Vince. Any time you need to know what "should" happen, I'm glad to help.
That'll do it. For the record, two for five on the big matches -- but oh, so close on the Rumble! Go Rey!Now scram!Class dismissed!(Professor Wrestling is a masked employee of Internet Broadcasting.
