"American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks is about to earn his set of wings on Broadway.

Starting June 6, Hicks will play Teen Angel in the revival of the classic musical "Grease."

The character sings the classic song "Beauty School Dropout." Hicks called the role "a classic fit for a classic performer" and he plans to add a "soulful flavor" to the song.

Frankie Avalon made the Teen Angel character famous with his performance in the big screen version of "Grease" in 1978.

Hicks called the role an "opportunity of a lifetime." He'll star in the production through Sept. 7.

The blues singer won the "American Idol" title in 2006.
