Scottsdale Teachers To Lose Jobs

Dozens, if not hundreds, of teachers at Scottsdale area schools may be out of a job next year. As a result of budget cuts, the Scottsdale Unified School District could be losing its first and second year teachers.

A spokesperson for the district confirmed layoffs are a possibility.

Some teachers, who did not want to be identified, say they have already received "Reduction in Force" notices, and were told they will not have jobs next year.

"They shouldn't be cutting teachers," said Jennifer Hillis, a parent. "No way!"

Hillis has high praise for her son's kindergarten class at Kiva Elementary School, which has about 16 or 17 children. Like many parents, she fears if teachers lose jobs, it will mean larger class sizes and less individual attention.

"I don't think the schools should be cut anymore," she said. "Our children should be our priority."

Others fear full-day kindergarten, a program popular with many parents, will also be on the chopping block.

Budget cuts and possible staffing reductions are on the agenda for next Tuesday's governing board meeting. The meeting will be held 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Scottsdale Unified School District Education Center.
