A local organization helps children involved in traumatic experiences, such as abuse or neglect, and puts them on the path to a healthier future.

Childhelp declined to speak on the specific case that involved the sexual assault case involving the 8-year-old girl, but a representative said Thursday that it's available for any and all cases like this one to help the child take his or her first steps to recovery.

"We don't expect that the experience will ever be gone, but to be able to give them a place to go forward to live and have a healthy life," said Paul Penzone, director of Prevention Programs.

Penzone said the first room a child would see is the playroom, filled with murals and oversized teddy bears.

The room aims to bring the child comfort and put them at ease.

The next step is the interview room, which is designed to be comfortable without distractions and would only involved questions from one expert, a forensic specialist.

"It's already a traumatic experience. We want to reduce that so what happens here is we bring all these different organizations together and try to make this a fluid comfortable process," said Penzone.

If medical attention or an examination is needed, then the exam room might be utilized.

By contrast the exam room is designed to be a total distraction to keep the child's mind off of what's happening.

In addition, upstairs there are cubicles for detectives to work cases and continue investigations.

"They're going to make sure that whoever harmed a child is going to be held accountable," said Penzone.

In cases like the one involving the attack of an 8-year-old girl, another important role of Childhelp, is to knock down any cultural and language barriers.

"So Childhelp will try their best to identify and learn as much about that culture to make sure the process suits the needs under the terms of the child," said Penzone.

Childhelp serves the entire Valley metro area.

About 90 to 150 children receive counseling from Childhelp each week.
